Iceland Volcano Eruption: 500 flights canceled

About 500 flights were canceled on Tuesday in the 29,000 planned across Europe because of the eruption of a volcano in Iceland, said Eurocontrol, the organization of European air traffic control.

Areas of high concentration of volcanic centers were located above the northern Great Britain, said the Brussels-based organization, Volcanic Ash Advisory quoting Center (VAAC), based in London.

According to the forecast center, the possibility is high that the ash had an impact on some parts of Denmark, southern Norway and southwestern Sweden Tuesday, according to Eurocontrol.

“This will impact on flights,” explained the organization.

Grímsvötn the volcano, which lies beneath the ice of the glacier Vatnajökull in the uninhabited south-east Iceland, erupted on Saturday for the first time since 2004, spewing ash, smoke and steam more than 20 kilometers high.

Although this eruption was stronger than the volcano Eyjafjöll in 2010, experts believe it unlikely that the scenario of last year repeats itself and that the airspace is closed for six days.

According to volcanologists, the contents of the ash cloud is heavier and less likely to spread this year.
