At least six people were killed and scores injured Tuesday crossing tornadoes and storms in the American states of Oklahoma and Kansas, said the local authorities.

A tornado near El Reno, a city in Canadian County, destroyed homes and caused a gas leak in a power plant located west of Oklahoma City, said the county sheriff.

A spokesman for the medical services the state has confirmed the deaths of four people in the county.

According to the Department of Emergency Management in Oklahoma, at least 60 people were injured and almost 58,000 homes were without power in the state. Damage was reported in at least 14 counties in this state.

In addition, two people were killed when a tree uprooted by the tornado struck their van in Stafford County, Kansas, according to local authorities.

Some 1200 people packed into a shelter in Newcastle, a town near Oklahoma City, said the manager of Oklahoma City, Nick Nazar.

The Governor of the State of Oklahoma Mary Fallin, invited residents to take “very seriously” the opinions of tornadoes and weather bulletins.

The tornado that devastated the city of Joplin Sunday, in the State of Missouri, has killed at least 122 people, making it the deadliest tornado in 60 years in the United States.
